This week's window was inspired by America's favorite TV couple, Lucy and Desi. Desi Arnaz was born in Cuba and met the red headed Lucy while he was working as band leader. They eloped and went on to star in one of the most indelible shows in American television history. Desi's Cuban roots were a constant plot centerpiece, as shown by the frequently latin-inspired wardrobes.

Tommy Ton is my favorite street style photographer, he never fails to capture trends with his amazing photography. Here, he shoots a group of bright young things as they cross the street heading to the Paris Couture shows. Inspired by this shot, I put together a colorful look made up of a teal "mermaid" Nina Ricci skirt, a deep back violet disco dress (styled as a top) and black accessories including a black crocodile black, black belt with gold buckle, and black netted hat. The star of this glam look is the stunning DONALD BROOKS white fox convertible coat. Donald Brooks was a Tony and Oscar-nominated American fashion and costume designer. By the 1960s, he was canonized by the New York Times as one of the most important designers in America. Brooks was born in New York City in 1928 and grew up in New Haven, Connecticut. He studied at Syracuse University, FIT, and Parsons. Brooks got his start creating a collection for Lord & Taylor in 1950 for then president Dorothy Shaver. In 1964, Brooks started his own line, with designs ranging from his famous dresses to shoes and textiles for furniture. Out of all his extensive work in stage and film, he is best known in the fashion world for his clean lines and bold fabrics, which Brooks designed himself.

Brooks has been lauded with 4 Coty awards in 1958, 1962, 1967, and 1974, the National Cotton Award in 1962, the New York Drama Critics award in 1963, the Parsons Medal for Distinguished Achievement in 1974 and an Emmy in 1982. He was a founding member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

A hint of Argentina's Treasures. This 1960's all silk printed jacket has a matching pleated skirt,
but we preferred pairing it with these Mod 60s pencil pants we found. This is a more modern take on the look. And the belt of course cause the argentines sure know their leather.

This is more Vogue Today than it's original McCalls in the 60's.

Some people think that vintage=old and not, shall we say fresh and vibrant. The beauty of vintage is that it is has a history, but it can be worn in a new way, the star component of a very fashion forward style sense.

Vintage dealers like me crave these timeless pieces of beauty and curate collections that span decades and merge trends. An untrained eye might have banished a padded shoulder Mugler jacket from the 80’s or that drapey 90s Armani suit to the nether regions of the closet, or worse yet, the bottom of a garbage bag destined for Goodwill just because its trend had passed. At 1ofaFind we throw those two pieces together and create a bespoke ensemble worthy of the best “street chic” blogs!

For many Vintage means “30 years plus”, for us it is past, present and future. It is all about fashion evolution. We were pretty excited to see the beautiful and multi-talented Irina Lazareanu at our booth at the last Manhattan Vintage fair in February. We're big fans of her bohemian style and were blushing as she perused our racks and delicately admired our accessories. What caught her eye were these fabulous eighties rocker earrings pictured below:

Well, I guess you could say we were kind of excited to see her wearing her very own 1 of a Find earrings at her model buddy Erin Wasson's birthday bash! I love the mixing of eras! Somehow the '80's homage to 1920's deco worked perfectly with her beaded flapper frock! Well played, Irina!

For their June 1953 issue, along with an article on "Five Steps to Marriage", Glamour Magazine did a spread on Pink dresses for "the girl-with-a-job." The cover for the spread begins with this dress and reads "A dress that maintains a strawberries-and-cream country freshness through wilting days in town." Doesn't that sound lovely?

Maud Frizon: The Original Model Slash Designer

Before Erin Wasson before Alexa Chung there was Maud Frizon. Working as model in the 1960's, she was required to supply her own shoes that complemented the designer's dress. Unable to find any shoes that were up to her standards, she began designing her own and the results were pure genius. Check out our collection below.

Patterns are an eternal spring trend. One that allows the designers and wearers to express their playful side. Two of my favorites from Spring 2011 were Alexander McQueen and Prada.

Both designers chose to use a black background for maximum graphic effect. Inspired by these designs, I played around with patterns against black and here are some of the looks.

The key pieces featured here are a Sant Angelo knit Orange and Black column skirt, Kansai Yamomoto Print Soft Blazer, and the Black and Red Sheer Wheat Kimono. Come in to see these pieces and much more!

In the Mood for Spring

Although there are 18 more days to go til' it's official, at 1 of a Find we are ready for spring. The weather gets warmer, the hemlines come up, love is in the air.

To celebrate, we've decorated the store with 2 spring displays. The first one is inspired by cherry blossoms, the first- and most beautiful- sign of greener pastures. It features a mix of pinks, purples, and floral patterns.

The second is an homage to Bohemian- chic dressing inspired by our Forest green embroidered peasant top. It is grounded in earth tones but also has a playful colors and whimsical accessories.

Bugs were all over the Lanvin runway last week, in the form of ornate pendants on chokers, belts and cuffs. It got me inspired to do a blog about what possibilities one could entertain with the brooches, earrings and belt buckles we have here at the store.

Show Your Love of Color with Prints!

Prints can be a little intimidating, but after playing dress up with the mannequins here at 1 of a Find, I think I've come up with a few tips on how to keep it fun and chiq without being garish and crazy cat lady.

Floral prints and plaids or stripes tend to work really well together, especially if said plaid is minimal. This houndstooth works well because both the black and mustard are found in the floral print. The Red buttons match the red belt and the rest of the accessories are minimal and totally classic.

Floral on floral can be a little tricky, so I applied the same learned technique above here. One vibrant abstract watercolor print pops so pretty out from under the more controlled and classic black and white printed jacket. Another very important element here is the silhouette. This works because although the prints are wild together, the look is grounded by the totally classic combination of shapes.

Another good trick is that when the colors of two florals work so well together, you really need nothing else than a fabulous bag to pull the look together.

Another great grounding element that instantly updates a look is denim! Either jeans or the jacket version, denim is the ultimate layering piece! Calm and cool in between two loud prints.

What else works? Just keepin it classy. It's hard to go wrong when all the elements are totally timeless. Layering them is a great way to upate the tried and true favorite pieces in your wardrobe.

And who says you have to pile on the prints? Sometimes the best way to show off a beautiful printed dress, like this beaded caftan here, is just to throw a fitted little black blazer over it! Instant updated cool!

Less is More! More is More!

When it comes to accessories, I am often caught between two different mantras. The KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and The Go Big or Go Home principle. Both are illustrated here by one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Tommy Ton of Jak & Jil.

I started fooling around in the store with purses, baubles, and belts to see which style I favored. I'm still undecided but had a great time with both looks. Check check it out!

In the Go Big or Go Home look, I went for bold reds and golds. It features a red leather Paloma Picasso belt (styled as a bracelet), Whiting pitted gold hinged bracelet, a gold Monet hinge bracelet, and a red and gold chain purse.

In the KISS look, I used a beautiful brass women's vendome watch complemented by a beaded Walborg Evening purse.

Nothing says effortless beauty like the 50's double strand of pearls pictured here. But if you are in the mood for some drama, a statement necklace says it all. Check out our porcelain lattice or 1920's Citrine Floral necklace.

To top it all off, however, a pair of sunglasses is absolutely necessary. They can hide sleepy eyes and pull an entire look together. We have featured here a pair of oversized Laura Biagotti sunglasses vs. the more delicate Christian Roth look.

Large and in charge or small and debonair, we have both looks to choose from at 1 of a Find!

Color Blocking or Prints?

This is the second season we've seen color blocking down the runway. Bold colors are so great for summer because with two simple pieces in complimentary colors you have an ensemble that is simple, chic and sophisticated. And the pop of colors add a helpful dose of fun. But what about all these great prints?? I love all the layering of stripes with florals with plaids, but sometimes it's a little easier to pair it with a solid, but with colors like these it's in now way pairing it down!

Marilyn: Buxom, Blonde, Bombshell

In the last blog post, I examined the style of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, first lady of fashion. In this one, I am going to lend my sartorial eye to Marilyn Monroe's fashion.

Marilyn dressed to please men but in the process, became a style icon for women. She was an expert at toeing the line between sexy and leaving enough to the imagination. She favored tight fighting pencil skirts and blouses that showed off her small waist and large chest. She rarely wore prints and instead relied on the cut and fit of the pieces. Many of her dresses and tops were designed to be worn with a bullet bra; a bra that literally made the wearer's breasts look like bullets. Check it out:

I have put together a Marilyn-inspired look from the lovely goodies at 1 of a Find Vintage. The look features a 1950's black wiggle dress with a satin bow, a 1960's Nettie Milgrim Bolero, a black lizard and gold handbag, white Christian Roth cateye sunglasses, gold bead and pearl strands, and Bruno Magli patent leather heels.

I recently watched a Mad Men episode, in which Don Draper pitches an ad campaign on the premise that all women want to be either Jackie, Marilyn, or both. I am not quite sure which side I fall on, so I've decided to a little inquiry into both looks.

Jackie, the ideal first mother and first wife, always acted with the utmost composure and grace as reflected by her style. She effortlessly transitioned between the polished looks of a stateswoman and the more relaxed look of Cape Cod. She commissioned one of her favorite designers, Gustave Tassell, to outfit her on her state visit to Pakistan and India. Here she is, addressing a crowd and riding in an elephant, in Tassell's designs.

Tassell's designs boast an intricate simplicity, with a focus on the seams and fastenings. This is beautifully exhibited in the buttons and ribbon on this eggplant jacket, which is a recent addition to the store.

A second, Jackie inspired look, features a structured black and white Balenciaga jacket.

Both looks are shown with a black Akris dress, a Black Bellstone alligator purse, 1950's double string of pearls, and Nina Ricci black pumps.

Only two days away! Let pulling frenzy begin! This year, in keeping with Spring 2011 runway trends, we will be bringing to you a prime selection of our Bohemian chiffon, leather and lace, Minimilist white, blacks and neutrals, and of course, our specialty, Vintage Designer pieces!

Here's a selection small taste of what's to come:

BOHEMIAN

We saw variations on this theme from Marc Jabobs/Louis Vuitton, to Roberto Cavali to D&G. The seventies are here to stay! Long flowing skirts in bright bold colors paired with killer boots or strappy platforms were all over the runway this spring!

Our version starts out with a colorfully printed, flowing chiffon dress, topped with belted chiffon lace and hand tooled leather and suede jacket. I don't even know what to say about these amazing stacked wooden platform boots. New York Dolls anyone? Oh, and let's not forget to mention the many strings of turquoise, coral and silver, because you can't pull off bohemian without a piling on a ton of jewelry.

MINIMILIST

Seventies keep going here. Wasn't that the first time we got that paired down aesthetic from Halston? Now we get our streamlined runway inspiration from Helmut Lang, Chloe, Jill Stuart and Celine. Clean, crisp lines feel particularly fresh this Spring in stark white. Nothing to take away from your natural Spring glow beauty!

Nothing says minimilist like a simple white dress with clean soft details and a classic, utilitarian trench. Of course, go ahead and throw a fabulous fancy cuff and a pair of killer heels to put a little pep in your step!

FABULOUS DESIGNER

Ok, so this one is a little harder to pin point. We saw even more seventies on the runway this time in bright lux fabrics that recall the high times of studio 54 and the designs of Yves Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta. Big hair under big floppy hats, big platforms under long flowing skirts and slacks, and big glasses.

One of the few escapes my life as a Mom, Wife and Treasure Scout allows me is a monthly book club. It usually involves a few bottles of Wine, G&T's (my drink of choice) and some amazing women. Book club is a monthly highlight of mine for many reasons, one of which it to catch up with my good friend Victorian Sullivan.

Victoria and I meet a few years ago and immediatly hit it off. We share many interests such a our love for everything Vintage, Whimsical decorating and Fluffy Persian Cats. Victoria is convinced I will one day kidnap her cat "Parsley" who I love!

Victoria isn't just a pretty face and Great gal to hang with, she's an Amazing business woman and the co-founder of White Rabbit England. Her whimiscal designs for Children's lamps and night lights have been featured in design magazines in both the UK and the US. Her collections are re-occuring features for exclusive retailers on-line and in-store. Most important though, they offer a comforting gleam of light for sleeping children all over the world.

This month UK magazine "Livingetc." featured Victoria on thier cover and did a piece on her marvelouse house here in Brooklyn. We highly suggest you go buy the issue, Grab a cup of tea and curl up for a good read and get ready to be inspired.

For those who've made an in-store visit to 1 of a Find, it's no surprise one of our favorite photographers is Gabrielle Revere. Her work has been seen in Life Magazine, numerous Fashion Spreads and - wait for it - on the walls of 1 of a Find.

When Gabrielle needs a taste of Old Glam, Vintage Flare or just that certain "Je ne sais quoi" she calls on us. Her last visit was men's wear inspired. Here is the final product, her music video:

Lately we've been noticing a lot references to the Edwardian and Victorian eras of tea dresses with hand cut lace. The silhouettes have changed, but certain stylings, like the high collar and the ornate delicacy in detail, have been showing up on the runway from Ralph Lauren to Dolce & Gabbana.
